Outfall Revitalization Program

Edmonton, AB

Project Overview

Delivering Critical Infrastructure in Environmentally Sensitive and Remote Terrain

This outfall rehabilitation program involved upgrades to approximately 30 stormwater and combined sewer overflow (CSO) outfalls across the Edmonton region. The scope encompassed a wide range of structural, civil, and pipeline improvements, including installation of new steel grating, CIPP liners, flare ends, upstream pipe replacements, and targeted outfall abandonments.

Work also included extensive concrete and structural rehabilitation along with erosion control measures such as rip rap placement, sinkhole remediation, and full site restoration. Additional upgrades addressed storm trunk systems, sanitary overflow infrastructure, and life safety components to ensure long-term performance and compliance.

These projects were delivered in environmentally sensitive and logistically challenging locations, requiring innovative construction approaches. Given the environmentally sensitive locations, low-impact construction methods were prioritized to minimize disturbance. For higher-risk sites, a risk-based approach was implemented, focusing on upstream rehabilitation and staged improvements to reduce system vulnerability. Environmental protection measures, including nest sweeps during bird breeding season, and direction of a Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist  were also integrated into project execution.
