Project Overview
Building Trans Mountain Emergency Service Terminals.
Across three projects, Whitson managed construction, installation, and commissioning to meet the operational requirements of Transmountain’s emergency services. The first project, the Edson, Alberta terminal, began design in August 2021, this pre-engineered building was completed ahead of schedule, including installation of 80 meters of phone, gas, and electrical lines.
Following this, the Kamloops Critical Parts & Emergency Response building was executed and fully completed in July 2024, successfully delivered through a design-build approach. Lastly, the Edmonton terminal, awarded in May 2023, was a 7-month design-build project completed in December 2023.
Project Challenges
Challenges & Innovations
CHALLENGE 01
Remote Site Locations
Each terminal was situated in an out-of-town area, requiring careful planning for material delivery, equipment mobilization, and site access.
CHALLENGE 02
Safety-Critical Construction
As emergency response facilities, the projects demanded strict adherence to fire and spill containment protocols, ensuring zero incidents during construction.
CHALLENGE 03
Tight Schedules
Fast-tracked timelines meant design, approvals, and construction had to be carefully sequenced to meet operational deadlines.
CHALLENGE 04
Coordination of Multiple Stakeholders
Managing local and client-hired subcontractors required proactive communication and scheduling to maintain quality and ensure smooth project execution.
